Check a hospital price file
Preview a CMS hospital standard charges file (CSV tall, CSV wide or JSON) against the template V3.0.0 rules. Every error and warning is listed with its row and column, grouped by rule, with a plain English fix.
Runs in your browser. Nothing you upload leaves your device.
This is a preview, not the official check. Confirm with the official CMS validator before you publish.
How it works
Read, check, list
- Your file is read 1 MB at a time from your disk, so large files do not have to fit in memory as text. You can cancel at any time.
- CSV rows go through the CMS validator's own checks from its open source library. JSON uses the same CMS schemas, compiled ahead of time.
- Every problem is listed, grouped by rule, with filters and search. Export the list as CSV or JSON to share with whoever builds the file.
Limitations
- A preview only. The CMS online validator is the reference, and passing here does not mean a file meets every CMS requirement.
- Only template V3.0.0 is checked. Files built on V2.2 or older will show many errors.
- The CMS validator stops at 250 errors and at a problem in rows 1 to 3. This tool keeps going where it can, so its counts can be higher.
- It checks the file's structure and values, not whether the prices are right or complete.
- Very large JSON files can take a while and use a lot of memory, since JSON is checked one charge item at a time against the full schema.
- Plain .csv and .json files only. Unzip gzip or zip files first.
Privacy
The file is read inside this tab and never sent anywhere. The page's security policy blocks every network request (connect-src 'none'), so nothing could be uploaded even by mistake. Results stay in memory and are gone when you close the tab. Only a theme choice is kept in your browser.
Data source
Rules from the CMS hospital price transparency template V3.0.0, through the @cmsgov/hpt-validator library version 2.6.0 (public domain), last refreshed 2026-10-25. Template and data dictionary: CMSgov/hospital-price-transparency. Sample files are synthetic.
Not official. This is an independent project, not a CMS product. Results match the CMS validator library on our tests. Extra checks this tool adds are labelled "Extra check (not in the CMS validator)".
